Understanding the UK and US legal markets

We have had over ten years of ABS in England & Wales, and subsequent reforms make the UK market increasingly attractive. New Standards & Regulations from the SRA created new ways to practise as a solicitor; more flexibility for regulated businesses; and more options for unregulated business to employ solicitors and deliver legal services.

The United States is reforming too. Utah and Arizona have led the way. There are opportunities to deliver across the US from Arizona and ways to invest in the legal market within ethics constraints.

With new entrants and competitors already evolving, now is the time to think clearly. I can help you navigate the changing regulatory environment to grow and develop. I work with investors, law firms and legal businesses to seize the opportunities in the US and UK.

Regulatory strategy and investment

Investment opportunities in the UK and US legal markets are growing. I have helped law firms develop the right structure and strategy to seek investment, and helped investors make the right decisions.

Private equity, SPACs, investment banks and venture capital all seek me out for insight and assistance with regulation, structure and insight into the US and UK markets.

Support for founders and start-ups

How is the legal market changing, and how are regulators in the US and UK creating new opportunities for you or your competitors? What does the latest research about how individual consumers, small business and others choose and use legal services mean for your business?

Our broad and deep experience of the legal market and consumer research means that we can help you understand how the market is developing and why.

Combining a deep domaine expertise with senior executive experience, a substantial non executive portfolio and a history of working with start ups and scale ups, I bring tailored support to founders and their senior teams.

Developing your legal workforce

Your people are your major asset. Too many law firms think in terms of lawyer/non-lawyer, with inflexible notions of talent, development and the modern workforce.

COVID-19 has driven flexible and remote working into firms that thought it could not work. The shift towards flexible lawyering will not reverse and firms of all types should be rethinking their workforce strategy to ensure they are resilient and poised for growth.

The introduction of the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination presents a huge opportunity to rethink your approach to recruitment, training and development of your legal workforce. You can now put your customers and business services at the heart of training your people.

I can help you navigate these issues and develop a workforce strategy that supports your businesses growth while ensuring flexibility and resilience.

Non-executive

As you take external investment, develop a new strategy or launch a start-up you  you might be thinking of appointing a non-executive director. Or you might want an additional, experienced new Board member who can combine detailed legal market insight alongside substantial non-executive experience in other markets. Or you may want to start with an adviser to your Board.

With appropriate challenge and support to your Board and Executive team I can help you refine, drive and deliver your strategy. I am also an experienced Chair of Audit & Risk Committees and can add that experience to the heart of your Board.

Risk management

With the level of change around you and your business growing, you will already know that you must manage the risks attached to your strategy. Better risk management will help you when taking the huge opportunities that present themselves. This is more than regulatory compliance.

I have chaired Audit & Risk Committees at two significant organisations. One is a UK health regulator. The other a major social housing provider with a multi million investment programme.  Applying my substantial experience alongside my knowledge of the legal market, I can help you use appropriate risk management strategies to deliver what you want, sensibly and coherently. Read one of my blogs on compliance and culture.

Regulatory strategy for legal regulators around the globe

Every legal regulator in the world is thinking about how to respond to changing demands from the public, clients and lawyers. Having led what is widely recognised as the world's most forward thinking regulatory reform programme I am well placed to help you modernise your regulatory approach. Whether it be ABS, MDPs, non lawyer ownership, changes to fee sharing or introducing entity regulation I can help you deliver reform quickly and effectively, including engaging with new providers, building customer and pubic engagement strategies and making the case for reform with lawyers, politicians and the judiciary.

I work in the ways you want in order to help you develop and design an updated regulatory approach that works for you and your stakeholders. I can bring evidence of how reform has worked in England & Wales, insight from across the USA, Canada and elsewhere in the world.
