About Me

I launched my own consultancy at the end of 2018 and have already worked with a group of truly select clients on exciting work across the UK, the US and beyond. Investors, law firms and legal businesses value the Board and C-Suite level advice and support I bring. Clients include private equity, investment banks, law firms, alternative providers, professional services firms, start ups and more. You can see some of the companies I have worked with on my home page and testimonials from my clients here.

My deep domain knowledge has been garnered over 30 years in the legal sector since obtaining a first class degree at Warwick University.

I have worked in public policy and as a regulator, engaging with and talking about the profession and legal market with a huge range of law firms, legal businesses and investors, as well as regulators and academics across the globe.

2014 - 2018 Solicitors Regulation Authority, Executive Director
2009 - 2013  Legal Services Board, Strategy Director
2004 - 2009  Legal Services Commission, culminating as Executive Director

I am an experienced adviser to a range of global investors, legal businesses, law firms and start ups across the US and UK.

Until the end of 2018 I led the reform programme at the SRA, delivering a liberalised and better regulated legal market. The core part of those reforms, the new SRA Regulations & Standards were introduced in November 2019, offering new ways for regulated, unregulated and individual solicitors to practise. I was also responsible for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, now being sat by candidates. Legal business should be thinking about their workforce strategy now so as to take advantage of the opportunities. I have been at the forefront of regulatory reform and the changing legal market for more than 15 years.

I am also an experienced non-executive. I served many years on the Boards of the General Dental Council and Citizen Housing, stepping down from both in 2021 to focus on my rapidly growing consultancy. I Chaired the Audit & Risk Committee of both of these organisations - one a national health regulator and the other a provider of over 30,000 social homes, with a multi million investment programme. I provide non-exec style and Board adviser support to start-ups.

I have been a member of the Expert Panel to the Independent Review of Criminal Legal Aid in England & Wales, appointed by the Lord Chancellor.

As well as assisting Arizona and Utah with regulatory reform programs I was appointed to the California State Bar's Closing the justice gap working group to bring experience and expertise of regulatory reform and the impact on the legal market.

I am also a Faculty Adviser to the Digital Legal Exchange. DLEX is a global institute of leading thinkers and doers from academia, business, government, technology and law, committed to accelerating digital transformation in the legal market.

I am known for my clear thinking: you can read my occasional thoughts on the legal market in my blog.

The Legal Tech Fund ran the best event for innovators int he legal market that I have found. TLTF 2023 was a a great opportunity to learn new things but best of all were the connections made and friends seen. These enabled new discussions and deeper debates about technology, capital deployment and liberalisation. TLTF 2024 is just one year away - I'm already excited.
